Embracing Holistic Substance Abuse Treatment: A Path to Healing

In the shadows of substance abuse, individuals often find themselves in a maze of despair, worrying that they may never find their way out. The longer someone puts off seeking help, the more it can feel as though they can’t take the first step out of their patterns and into the sunlight.

Getting lost in this maze is painful. The holistic substance abuse treatment program at ILC brings clients closer to themselves and others around them, creating room for peace. The clients who choose to work with us to break out of their patterns are not merely a diagnosis; they are unique individuals deserving unconditional love and support.

What is Holistic Substance Abuse Treatment?

Our holistic treatment for substance abuse empowers individuals to take charge of their well-being and break free from addictions. We believe in the transformative power of unconditional love and each person’s capacity for improvement.

When a person comes to us for help, we review their story and create a personalized program of healing based on these principles, which we’ve seen bear fruit time and again:

  • Treat each person as an individual.
  • Address root causes, not just symptoms.
  • Everyone can improve themselves.
  • Work collaboratively to solve problems.
  • Love and support promote healing.

By embracing a holistic approach to trauma treatment, we can show our clients that they have the power to take control of their well-being and achieve lasting health and happiness.

What is Substance Abuse?

Substance abuse is a pattern of attention and use that can apply to any number of vices. Whether it’s alcohol, drugs, love, sex, or opioids, a compulsive pattern of use seeps into every part of a person’s life. When a person struggles with a substance abuse addiction, every day turns into a complex web of uncontrollable cravings and addictive behaviors. If left unchecked, an addiction can quickly lead to life-destroying consequences.

For some people, a single interaction with a substance or behavior can create a pattern of substance abuse. In contrast, others may interact with the same substances without developing a pattern of addiction. How can you tell if your behavior turns addictive? These are some signs and symptoms to consider:

  • Inability to control your behavior
  • Loss of motivation and/or loss of memory
  • Continuing to interact with a substance or behavior, even after it causes problems
  • Compulsively seeking out opportunities to consume or participate in the substance or behavior

For many people, substance use and compulsive behaviors involve more than one thing. Mental health struggles often coincide with substance abuse and addictive behavior, requiring careful dual diagnosis treatment.

What is a Dual Diagnosis?

Dual diagnoses occur when a person experiences a mental health condition and a substance use disorder simultaneously, called co-occurring disorders. Mental health conditions show up alongside substance abuse about 30% of the time, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

For those who struggle with severe mental illness, the likelihood is even higher, with co-occurring disorders (such as substance abuse) increasing to about 50% of the time. To treat co-occurring disorders, we use a range of modalities, such as:

When a client experiences co-occurring disorders, we focus our treatment on both conditions. Our dual diagnosis rehab program considers the whole person.

Getting Help for Substance Abuse with a Dual Diagnosis

There is nothing mysterious or shameful about a dual diagnosis. A person who experiences conditions like anxiety or depression may find it very easy to cope with these stressors by using alcohol, sex, or other mind-altering substances. However, these substances only compound pain and suffering; they do not make them go away forever. If you’re using substances to cover up pain, it’s time to seek help.

Consider some common signs of dual diagnosis to see if they reflect your experience.

  • Extreme mood swings
  • Using drugs or alcohol to feel better
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Difficulty with friendships and relationships
  • Difficulty holding a job
  • Financial problems
  • Legal problems
  • Angry, violent, or risky behavior

Our expert clinicians and therapists carefully consider all factors and collaborate with each client to maximize the efficacy of each dual-diagnosis treatment. We can offer residential treatment, as well as PHP and IOP outpatient programs.

Weaving Holistic Treatment and Traditional Treatments Together

Our holistic approach complements traditional treatment methods, enhancing the effectiveness of evidence-based therapies. While conventional approaches remain the cornerstone of recovery, incorporating holistic methods ensures a more personalized, full-spectrum care plan.

No two individuals are alike; recognizing this uniqueness is crucial in caring for one’s health. While traditional methods serve to reduce or eliminate symptoms of addiction, our holistic approach seeks to identify and address the underlying causes of addiction. True healing comes from understanding the complete picture, paving the way for a more profound and lasting recovery.
